We were approached by a potential new client to look at improving their existing car parking on a large Victorian mill site. The existing staff car park was in a poor state of repair with a mixture of degraded tarmac surfacing and temporary stone chippings. The facilities were not fit for purpose and the estates team were open to suggestions to provide new parking facilities to improve the amenities for their staff.
In conjunction with their structural engineer, we designed a car park which worked with the existing site falls to minimise the amount of excavation and therefore costs. A large attenuation tank was installed to collect groundwater. Heavy duty surface water channels were installed to control surface water run-off into a series of concrete manhole chambers. An interceptor tank was constructed before flow controlled discharge into the culverted river Beal on site, after the necessary permissions were granted by the Environment Agency. The car park was excavated and stoned ready to receive two courses of asphalt, with a Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) surface course. Height limit restriction barriers were installed with associated signage and 200 car parking spaces were marked out in thermoplastic paint.
The project was completed within the 12 week programme and on budget.
Since completion of this project, we have regularly returned to the Shaw Mill site to maintain the existing roads and hardstandings, as well as projects on other Shop Direct sites throughout the North West.
