- Outdoor Seating and Garden
The school contacted us to look at developing an untidy and unutilised area of land. They wanted to create a garden and outdoor teaching area with full DDA accessibility. After meeting on site and discussing their proposals, we came up with a scheme to provide a meandering pathway with 7 large, timber planters leading to a maze style seating area and story teller’s chair.
The ground was uneven and some cut and fill excavation works were required to reduce the falls to ensure the proposed path was DDA compliant. The path had to be a bound surface to comply with DDA regulations and we proposed a resin surface which, as well as being decorative and hard wearing, is also porous. As there was no existing drainage in the vicinity, the permeable paving proved the most suitable option. The remaining area was covered with a weed membrane and play grade chippings were laid over.
At the end of the site, a maze seating area was formed in play grade timber with enough seating for a whole class facing a large, story teller’s chair. Each class has been given their own planter to look after and we hope to see the fruits of their labour on our next visit to the school.
